In the order which I've used them. Newest at the top.

Contents

[edit] type-and-go

  • dialog and its variations, like kdialog.
  • Gtk-Launch -- Doesn't display a list of partial matches to items in history. But this app is bad at all.
  • deskbar -- Too many dependencies to install..
  • xfrun -- from xfwm. Doesn't highlight the last command, so I have to manually empty it before I can type. Stupid.
  • Katapult -- Tightly bound with KDE, so it's unusable.
  • gmrun -- Cannot view the history of a partial-match.
  • KDE has a nice one which comes with it.
  • TRN - Launcher 4 -- ruby-Tk. Still a work in progress. Tk is too hopeless to use.
  • TRN - Launcher 3 -- ruby-Tk. Very primitive.
  • TRN - Launcher 2 -- Pure console. Very primitive.
  • TRN - Launcher -- Not a good idea
  • xrun
    • Does not focus the text area by default. Sad. I wonder if I could throw a tab key at it when it launches?
  • bbrun -- Cannot view the history of a partial-match.
untested

[edit] Menus

[edit] Buttons

I don't care for these, but I'll list them nontheless.

  • wmappl
  • fancylauncher
  • buttonbox -- seems to have no home page. It exists in various BSD collections.
    • Author: Paul J Collins <sneakums at eircom.net>
  • apwal
  • kedulaunch -- I can't find it, but from what I can see from screenshots.. it's neat.
  • fbpanel has support for such stuff.
  • KDE has a bar which does this sort of thing.
  • asbutton -- For AfterStep. I dunno if it could be used elsewhere.
    • the project is dead.

[edit] Taskbars

  • KDE has one, and a lot of its apps use it.
    • Strangely, I don't need a tray if I run 'dcopserver_shutdown' and then 'dcopserver' - tray-only applications begin launching in their own little window. It's quite handy actually. But to make good use of this, I'd have to force these windows to get the heck out of the way. wmctrl could be used for that. But then I'd have to somehow have the wm not have maximized screens step over that area.
  • fbpanel
  • Avant Window Navigator
  • trayer (link?)
    • maybe from FVWM? Or just grab it from archlinux's trayer archive? The home page seems to now be [1] so it's official fvwm I think..
    • screenshot
    • trayer --edge top --align left --widthtype request --distance 15 --margin 10 --transparent true --alpha 255 & This puts trayer in the upper left corner, at about (x,y) (10,15), and it grows to the right as icons are added. Might be worth a try, for you.
  • stalonetray -- looks promising.

[edit] Desktops

[edit] Other

  • SiLO -- What.. in .. the.. fwck. It feels so cool. But.. uh.. so hacker-ish. Neato. I could do some coding in Ruby I guess. Somehow.
